[Limassol, 16 October 2024] – During the European Researchers’ Night on September 27th, RAVATAR made its first appearance at the Nicosia edition of this pan-European event, presenting its real-time AI avatar technology. With a focus on blending innovation with education, RAVATAR’s showcase marked a pivotal moment in illustrating the potential of AI for connecting people with science and history.

A Europe-Wide Celebration of Science

The European Researchers’ Night is an initiative by the European Commission (EC) to promote a culture of academic exploration, encourage public engagement in scientific endeavors, and emphasize the role of researchers in society. Held annually in over 23 countries and 400 cities, it is one of Europe’s largest science celebrations.

In Cyprus, the program is supported by the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), which leads national activities to align with the European vision, fostering public interest in science and bridging connections between researchers and the community. The occasion’s significance was elevated by the attendance of prominent figures, including the Commissioner for Gender Equality, Ms. Josie Christodoulou, and the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy of Cyprus, Dr. Nicodemos Damianou, PhD.

A Mission to Connect and Inspire

The theme for this year’s Nicosia event, “Mission Possible: Researchers on Board for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” closely aligns with RAVATAR’s commitment to enhance seamless digital communication, foster cross-community collaboration, and reduce boundaries to information access — ultimately contributing to a more inclusive digital landscape.

More than 60 booths staffed by scientists offered attendees hands-on opportunities to explore interactive experiments, emerging technologies, multimedia, and scientific equipment. Among these, RAVATAR stood out by presenting the latest product of its ongoing collaboration with RIF, the event hosts – a holographic AI avatar of Marie Skłodowska-Curie, built on their shared efforts to advance public awareness of science.

Introducing the AI Science Ambassador

One of the most influential scientists in history, Curie was a renowned physicist and chemist known for her pioneering work in radioactivity. She shattered conventions as the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize and remains the only person to win in two distinct scientific disciplines: Physics and Chemistry.

Encased within RAVATAR’s proprietary 4K holographic display, RAVABOX, the interactive AI avatar of Marie Curie appeared vividly before the audience, responding to questions in real-time as if she were truly present.

Attendees of all ages were drawn to the interactive demonstration, asking about her groundbreaking discoveries, her journey as a pioneering woman in science, and the personal drive behind her relentless pursuit of knowledge.

From inquisitive children intrigued by the lifelike presence to aspiring scientists eager to delve into her achievements, this dynamic experience left a lasting impression, offering a memorable glimpse into Curie’s story.

A Vision for the Future of Knowledge

By bringing Curie’s AI personality to life, RAVATAR sought to engage audiences with her legacy, igniting interest in science — especially among youth — and spotlighting the contributions of this significant figure. This effort represents another step toward a broader goal of bridging the past and present to inspire future generations, promoting inclusivity in science education, and making learning an enthralling, immersive experience.

“Reimagining Marie Curie as an AI-powered avatar goes beyond simply honoring the past; it’s about revealing the unseen — connecting people with the spirit of discovery itself,” said Ruslan Synyskyy, CEO of RAVATAR. “At the European Researchers’ Night, we demonstrated how technology can transcend both time and space, creating a bridge across eras and disciplines. This isn’t merely an educational experiment; it’s a vision for a world where knowledge is vibrant and interactive, where the curiosity of one generation ignites the creativity of the next.”

The Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation, and Technology of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Dimitris Skouridis, also highlighted how the European Researchers’ Night plays a crucial role in bridging innovative minds with the public, stating, “This is why events like the European Researchers’ Night are a unique opportunity to cultivate a culture of research, innovation, and technology. A culture that encourages the youth to understand the possibilities these sectors offer and to become part of a modern ecosystem that will, through its own development, contribute to the progress of the country.”

RAVATAR’s presence at the European Researchers’ Night marks a key milestone in merging technology and education, revitalizing the narrative of science history and showcasing AI’s power to build connections that extend beyond time constraints. The positive reception of the Marie Curie avatar reveals a growing demand for interactive learning approaches that not only inform but also break down barriers, inviting audiences to step inside history and engage with the legacies that have shaped our world.
